Candle Safety Information

At White Candle we take safety and use of our candle products very seriously. Whilst candles are safe when used properly we urge all customers to take notice of these safety notices to avoid injury or fire.

By accepting White Candle Terms and Conditions at point of sale you are agreeing to follow these guidelines.

For All Candles

General guidelines, for specific information relating to certain types of candle see below.

  1. Never leave burning candles unattended.
  2. Always read and follow manufacturer's instructions supplied with candles and candle holders.
  3. Burn out of reach of children and pets.
  4. Extinguish candles with a candle snuffer. Do not blow them out. Never use water to extinguish a candle.
  5. Ensure candles are placed at least 10cm / 4 inches apart and allow headroom above the candle for the heat to disperse.
  6. Ensure candles are burned away from flammable items.
  7. Candles should be burned away from other sources of heat such as television sets and away from direct sunlight.
  8. Candles should be burned in an area free from draughts.
  9. Trim wick to 1cm / ½ inch before lighting or relighting. If the candle smokes, extinguish and trim the wick.
  10. Remove all packaging and labels before use.
  11. Use a suitable non-flammable holder.  You are responsible for ensuring the container (holder, candlestick, sconce etc.) is suitable for the candle / candletype (see below).
  12. Ensure candles are burned in an upright position.
  13. To avoid damage to surfaces, always place candles and candle holders on a surface that will not be damaged by heat e.g. ceramic tiles or plates. Table mats are NOT suitable.
  14. Do not move candles when lit or the wax is still liquid.

For Tealights and Nightlights

Information for White Candle Tea Lights - including long lasting tealights (8, 9 or 10 Hour) which generate greater heat than normal (4 hour) tealights.

  1. Place holders on a surface that will not be damaged by heat.
  2. Do not burn on a television or other warm place.
  3. Tealights are suitable for lanterns or for holders which have holes in them as the tealight case will hold the wax as it melts.  However, tealights may spill so it is recommended to use suitable holders.
  4. Nighlights are suitable for lighting uses only. Do not use in food warmers or vaporisers.
  5. Long lasting tealights and nightlights (8, 9 or 10 hour) will generate more heat than normal candles. It is your responsibility to ensure the holders are suitable. In particular, glass and ceramic holders should be sufficient to support heat from long lasting tealights.
  6. Do not use in oil burners or lanterns where there is less than 8cm / 3 inches of space above the flame.
  7. NEVER blow out a candle and NEVER use water to extinguish the flame. ALWAYS use a candle snuffer. Exposing a heated candle holder to cold water may result in the holder exploding due to sudden change in heat - a common cause of injury.

For Dinner, Taper and Pillar/Church Candles

Information relating to dinner candles, taper candles and pillar/church candles.

  1. When using dinner candles, ensure that there is a tight fit in the candle holder.
  2. Candles with a diameter over 5cm / 2 inches should be burned on a spiked holder or flat dish.
  3. Pillar candles over 6cm / 2½ inches should be burned for at least 4 hours at a time.

  2. Never let the flame come into contact with the container.
  3. To maintain an even burn, make sure the wick remains in the center of the container.
  4. Do not allow foreign objects (e.g. matches) to fall into the wax pool.

  9. NEVER blow out a candle or use water to extinguish the flame. ALWAYS use a candle snuffer.

Incense Sticks and Cones

Although there is no flame, the burning embers of incense sticks or cones get very hot and can start fires.

  1. Never leave lit incense unattended.
  2. Always use a proper holder or burner that catches the ash.

For Essential Oil Burners

Essential oil burners are a great way to scent rooms with out the burning stick smell you sometimes get with incense sticks.

Most use tealights as their heat source and should be treated the same as any other candle.

  1. Never leave a lit essential oil burner unattended.
  2. Always use a proper burner that is designed for the purpose.
  3. Do not use if the burner is cracked or broken.
  4. Do not let the reservoir burn dry - the burner could crack and the tealight fall out.
